Dan Meyer proposes changes to education funding

•April 10, 2010 • Leave a Comment
RHINELANDER – State Representative Dan Meyer is proposing a change to the way state school funds are distributed.

The way general school aids are doled out right now is based soley on property values.

The higher the property value in a school district, the less money that district gets from the state.

Meyer’s proposed bill would make it so that 50% of that funding would now be based on income-level.

According to Representative Meyer, the thought process behind current distribution, is the families living in districts with higher property values should theoretically be able to contribute more to school funding.

Meyer says, however, in much of the Northwoods we have a unique situation, high property values, with lower-paying jobs, “We do have high property values, but our wages don’t correspond to the property values and you can’t pay bills with property values and you can’t buy groceries with property values.”

According to Meyer this is why so many Northwoods schools have been forced to go to referendum.

He says it would be more fair to distribute the general aid based on 50% property value and 50% income-level.

Meyer says if this method had been in place during the 08-09 school year, schools in Oneida and Vilas county alone would have received about 13-million dollars more in general state aid.

Representative Meyer says his bill will not raise any taxes or fees.

He introduced it in early March, but says it won’t be voted on until at least next session.

Vilas County Conservation Congress to be held April 12 in St. Germain

•March 10, 2010 • Leave a Comment

The DNR changed the venue after several dozen residents were turned away (including me) during the spring 2009 Conservation Congress meeting that was held in Sayner.  Frustration over hunting and snowmobiling seasons overlapping fueled much of the 2009 discussion.  Now with the deer herd overstated, Governor vetoing to retain ability to choose DNR Secretary, let’s see how the 2010 meeting goes:

Vilas County Conservation Congress meeting has new location

ST. GERMAIN – By strong public request, this year’s Vilas County Fish and Wildlife Spring Hearings and Annual Conservation Congress meeting is moving to larger quarters at the St. Germain Elementary School on STH 70. The old meeting place was too small for the growing crowd of people attending this annual event.

The spring hearings will be held this year on April 12 at 7 p.m.. The annual hearings give sports men and women an opportunity to provide input on potential fishing, hunting, trapping rules and other outdoor recreation activities in Wisconsin. Annual congress meetings, held after the DNR’s rules hearings, give people a chance to comment on congress proposals and recommendations. In addition, people in attendance elect representatives to the congress, which advises the state Natural Resources Board. For more information go to http://dnr.wi.gov/org/nrboard/congress/spring_hearings/index.html.

My home during teen years featured in Lakeland Times: Memories of Darling’s Resort

George – Thanks for remembering and sharing!

The last remaining cottage at Darling’s Resort. Lou Noppe is building his modern home behind it.
Memories of Darling’s Resort
By George Tanner

We received the following submission which we think will be of interest to our readers. It is these childhood memories of vacationing in the Lakeland area that bring so many back to vacation in the Northwoods. Many become seasonal homeowners, or opt to live here year-round. George is a seasonal homeowner.

Darling’s Resort must have been just a dream for Dave Darling when he purchased a tract of land on the southeast shore of Crawling Stone Lake in August of 1936.

The bulk of the land, that included several hundred feet of frontage on the lake, was without buildings, although the purchase price of $2,900 did include an older cottage that had been part of an even older resort to the north . . . and a boat! What a bargain!

While the majority of the frontage bordered low wetlands, the north end of the parcel contained about 400 feet of prime, low bank sand frontage. Three-hundred feet of that would become the centerpiece of Darling’s Resort.

Little is known of the existing cottage, except that some years later, Dave would restore that cottage and it would become the fifth rental unit in the resort. It must have been uninhabitable in 1936, because the first order of business in 1937 was to build a small 12′ by 16′ cabin up “on the hill,” away from the lake, that would become Dave’s “home” while he built the other cottages for the resort, and eventually a home for himself and the woman who became his wife shortly after – Olivia, or “Ole” as everyone called her.
